Because in 2020, politics is all the rage.

(Even though these comparisons are just on the basis of looks, in most cases, there are some (actually, a lot!) similarities in personalities also)

  1. Donald Trump- Dolores Umbridge

Meet “Trumbridge”. Need we say more?

We all hate Trump to the core, just like we hate this lady. She is the most relatable kind of villain, who is prejudiced, vain, self centered and a psychopath. She misused her powers and ran a pure blood, anti-muggle campaign (which J K Rowling modeled on the racial divides). Similarly, Trump is a known racist who supports white supremacists openly.

Not to mention, both are the next-door Karens, who we all try to stay away from!

Donald Trump and Dolores Umbridge have a *lot* more in common than their coiffed hair. In what is perhaps the strongest parallel between the two, both Trump and Umbridge wasted no time abusing their power once in charge. POTUS has used his presidential pen frequently to enact swift and extreme change during his first days in office. Umbridge’s version of Trump’s executive orders? Decrees. One of her most notorious decrees forced a mandatory disbanding of all student organizations. Like any fascist regime, this rule was enacted to ensure that students couldn’t gather and form opposition. In fact, Umbridge was obsessed with shutting down the media — just like her sinister spirit animal Donald Trump.

2. Narendra Modi- Albus Dumbledore

Modi looks extremely similar to Dumbledore on occasions, so much so that one wonders if it is a superbly crafted PR stunt. Both are old fellows with long white beards, who are great orators and clever visionaries*.

*Even Modi’s opponents often agree that he is a great visionary, even though many (a lot!) of his ideas fail during the execution

Modi is old and single just like Dumbledore, and his full name is “Narendra Damodardas Modi”, which seems to be the Indian take on “Albus Percival Wulfrick Brian Dumbledore”

3. Vladimir Putin- Lord Voldemort

V for Vladimir and V for Voldemort. One is the smartest student Hogwarts ever produced, second is an ex-KGB agent with a super specialized skillset. Both have the death-stare look, and occupy highly powerful positions in the global politics.

And, what’s more, young Putin bore a striking resemblance to a young Tom Riddle, both in looks and mannerisms.

It has been said that the young Putin was something of terror while at elementary school. Reports from teachers and fellow students suggest that the future Russian leader talked in class, didn’t do his math homework and, on one occasion, threw a chalkboard eraser at another student.

4. Barack Obama- Kingsley Shacklebolt

One is the minister of magic of the most powerful ministry, and the other is a magical ex-leader of one of the most powerful nations. Both tall black wizards, with a “reassuring tone and commanding stature”. Kingsley had a calm demeanor and incredible power, and admirable code of conduct. Similarly, Obama is perfection embodied, a man of character, with an exceptional educational pedigree and a great sense of humor. The way he dealt with his opponents during his terms was exceptional, such a personality comes only once in a decade.

(Okay, before I start daydreaming about these fine men and get distracted, let us move on)

5. Angela Merkel- Minerva McGonagall

Both Minerva and Merkel are ISTJ personality types (If the internet is to be believed). These ladies are a bit old, but yet are one of the smartest characters in their stories. Strict and stern, they leave no stone unturned when it comes to getting the things done.

6. Kim Jong Un- Crabbe

Vincent Crabbe came from a pure-blood family of death eaters, and is known for casting dark curses out of whimsy, such as the Cruciatus curse. Kim Jong Un was born in the most affluent family of North Korea, and is known for his eccentric and authoritative ways of governing the people.

7. Boris Johnson- Arthur Weasley

Am I the only one who was confused when they saw Boris, thinking that they have seen this face before?

8. Justin Trudeau- Gilderoy Lockhart

Okay, I am pretty sure Justin Trudeau is not an empty shell like Lockhart. Lockhart was all about faking his achievements to retain his fame and stature. Trudeau is pretty smart. However, they do share many commonalities in how they look and dress-up.

First, on a superficial, appearance level these two dandies are cut from the exact same colorful cloth. Trudeau loves showing off his snazzy socks. Lockhart loves strutting around in his flashy robes. Trudeau showing off Star Wars socks. Lockhart donning “forget-me-not blue” robes. Trudeau wears rainbow socks. Lockhart wears “robes of aquamarine.” Trudeau in pink Nato socks. Gilderoy in “sweeping robes of turquoise.”

Adding to their foppishness, both Trudeau and Lockhart flash pearly white smiles constantly and have immaculate wavy dos they make way too much ado over. In Rowling’s second book Lockhart is constantly referenced as caring a lot about hair. Trudeau similarly takes great thought and care for how each lock of hair on his head is placed. The media have even taken a deep interest in his personal hair stylist and “much-envied mane.”

There are a few more politicians which have strong similarities with their HP counterparts, but we believe that 7 is the most magical number of all. (And the attempt to create 7 parts always results in one extra :P )
